The Breast Lift Procedure
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure in which the appearance of the breast is enhanced by restoring the elevation of the breast. Numerous factors are known to induce sagging in the breast including aging, child birth, etc. In addition to elevating the stature of the breast, a patient also has his/her areola and nipple repositioned during the breast lift procedure. Patients may opt to have this procedure done in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as breast implants. Such procedures are known as breast augmentation procedures.
Patients who wish to undergo a breast lift can choose from either a full breast lift (referred to as a mastopexy procedure) or can have a modified breast lift. Full breast lifts call for a “lollipop incision,” one which engulfs the areola and moves downwards, forming a small curve along the bottom portion of the breasts. This type of incision is most commonly employed by plastic surgeons as it produces breasts that have a very natural shape. Once the incision is made, the surgeon removes the excess skin and the breast is elevated. Some procedures also call for areola to be reduced in size. The full breast lift does indeed result in some scarring. Some of the scarring will be hidden (such as the scarring located at the junction between the body and breasts), while others parts of it will be clearly visible. The scars will become less noticeable with time.
Modified breast lifts, unlike full breast lifts, require fewer incisions. Cosmetic surgeons have developed several variants of the modified breast lift, including the “donut” and “crescent” mastopexy. The most common modified lift, known as the concentric mastopexy, focuses on the removal of skin surrounding the areola. Modified breast lifts produce much less scarring than do full lifts. However, the reduction in invasiveness comes at a cost – the breasts are not as rejuvenated.
Breast lifts, as breast implant procedures, do have their share of risks. Only healthy patients should consider going in for such a procedure. Even those that are healthy should expect the possibility of complications arising. It is best to talk to your cosmetic surgeon to get an idea of how risky undergoing such a procedure is in your current circumstances.
The length one should expect the results of their breast lift procedure to linger for can vary. Given that the procedure was performed by a qualified surgeon, one should expect for results to be visible for an extended amount of time.
